There are hundreds of conscientious conservationists (there’s a tonguetwister for you) out there; all of whom have their own inspiring stories, but it can at times seem a lonely, never ending pursuit. With such significant problems to solve, we can all become dejected and defeatist at times. Here’s a few inspiring quotes to get conservationists motivated.
“I do have hope. Nature is enormously resilient, humans are vastly intelligent, the energy and enthusiasm that can be kindled among young people seems without limit, and the human spirit is indomitable. But if we want life, we will have to stop depending on someone else to save the world. It is up to us-you and me, all of us. Myself, I have placed my faith in the children.”
Jane Goodall
“Now, over half of us live in an urban environment. My home, too, is here in the city of London. Looking down on this great metropolis, the ingenuity with which we continue to reshape the surface of our planet is very striking. It’s also very sobering, and reminds me of just how easy it is for us to lose our connection with the natural world. Yet it’s on this connection that the future of both humanity and the natural world will depend. And surely, it is our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth.”
David Attenborough.
“Wildness is the preservation of the World.”
Henry David Thoreau
“Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children’s children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”
Theodore Roosevelt
“That land is a community is the basic concept of ecology, but that land is to be loved and respected is an extension of ethics. That lands yields a cultural harvest is a fact long known, but latterly often forgotten.”
Aldo Leopold
“In conservation, the motto should always be ‘never say die’.”
Gerald Durrell
“I learned long ago that conservation has no victories, that one must retain connections and remain involved with animals and places that have captured the heart, to prevent their destruction. I am sometimes asked why, given a world that is more wounded and scarred, I do not simply give up, burdened by pessimism. But conservation is my life, I must retain hope”
George B Schaller
”Caring for a tree is caring for your soul.”
Amit Ray
“What obligation is more binding than to protect the cherished, to defend whoever or whatever cannot defend itself, and to nurture in turn that which has given nourishment? I’m reminded of words written by John Seed, an Australian environmentalist. When he began considering these questions, he believed, “I am protecting the rain forest.” But as his thought evolved, he realized, “I am part of the rain forest protecting myself.”
Richard Nelson.
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.”
Native American proverb
“Nature is painting for us, day after day, pictures of infinite beauty.”
John Ruskin
”The only way to save a rhinoceros is to save the environment in which it lives, because there’s a mutual dependency between it and millions of other species of both animals and plants.”
David Attenborough
”What is a fish without a river? What is a bird without a tree to nest in? What is an Endangered Species Act without any enforcement mechanism to ensure their habitat is protected? It is nothing.”
Jay Inslee
”Unless we practice conservation, those who come after us will have to pay the price of misery, degradation, and failure for the progress and prosperity of our day.”
Gifford Pinchot
Ahh. I’m torn. I have 3 favourites – Jane Goodall, Theodore Roosevelt & Gifford Pinchot. 💚
